Don't you LOVE a new year? And the chance to
renew and refresh yourself? That's what this issue of
USED is all about. Enjoy!
Some 2006 ideas...

Getting...and staying...organized
If there's anything all us need MORE than more
time...it's a way to get ourselves organized, and stay
that way throughout the year. After all, in our
industry, organization means more bucks (and alas,
sloppy organizing means LOSS of income!)
I've gathered some
ideas from our Sharing Board. I like Janis'
best...besides mine of course ;-)

Fresh year, fresh thinking
And a fresh entry on our Thinking Out of the Box
Page.
While you're checking it out, think about e-mailing
Kate with YOUR brilliant out-of-the-box idea.

January's way to make $100
We've been tracking, every month, ways to MAKE or
SAVE $100 a month in your business, so you can
invest that $1200 into knowledge for your business
by attending the NARTS Conference
in June in Atlanta.
By now, you should have $600 tucked away and only
$600 to go! For January, let's MAKE an extra $100
Without even getting off the chair you are now
sitting in. For free.
It's so easy it's scary. And it gets easier every time
you do it. In FACT if you sent me a nickel for every
new dollar this idea put in your till...I could go to
Conference!
Well, I know I won't get those nickels, but I'm be in
Atlanta anyway. I'll be doing
TWO workshops: first, Your Consignment
Agreement: Making it PAY! and another
workshop on Starting...or RE-
Starting...
a Shop, for those who are beginning, revamping,
managing a shop
or
brushing up on the bedrock issues of shopkeeping.
Get the
info on NARTS Conference.

How many reasons do YOU give your customers to buy?
We've all heard some great stories about how an
item
we're selling is going to be used. It's
amazing the uses folks can put things to...a punch
bowl becomes home for a turtle, a
jacket is will be embroidered in crewel,
she's buying that old dictionary to make an
altered book. (Click on the picture above, if you're
curious about THAT)
Collect and USE these stories in your sales chitchat.
You could even gather them into a brochure, "Our
Amazing Customers' Creations with Finds from
OurShop". Great handout and terrific
word-of-mouth!
I had a staffer once who removed trim
and buttons from too-bad-even-for-charity items.
She'd baggie them up with our broken jewelry and
we'd pull out the well-worn out-of-date jeans etc,
and
once every few months, we'd have a "crafty stuff
corner".
Or get some publicity out of off-beat reasons to buy
in your shop. If you get
snapshots of the theatrical costume a customer got
together from your stock, the necklace another made
out of clearance-table jewelry, or
his wall of decorative plates in his new
dining room, you have a GREAT story idea
for your locallife-style reporter.
Cruise the Internet for ideas, and hand out how-to
sheets
referencing the URLs. Like these: How to Make a Tea-Cup Bird
Feeder and How to be a Fairy Princess
If you get really into this, you could
even add a page to your web site, like Thrift Town
did. The more reasons for people to come in and to
buy the better, right?
