Ask Auntie Kate:

"I can't seem to make my shop look as good as I'd like easily, so it looks different every week. I've tried everything. Can you tell me an easy way to arrange it so it looks tempting to customers?"

Auntie Kate replies: There's a 5-letter answer:

Sell the COLOR!

An excerpt from  10  Simple Low- or No-Cost Ways to make $10,000 more

Fill your swing shop area, your interior displays, your 2- and 4-ways with outstanding colors. It's the easiest, most eye-popping way to gather the various goodies from your selling floor that you want to highlight this week. Then, your stock/ "regular" racks will automatically look better, too!

Sometimes, the color choice you'll make is obvious. St. Patrick's Day, Easter, the Fourth of July all have their traditional colors. Or, if your home team's having a big game, their colors might be the ones you will choose.

Other times, you'll have to do a bit of hunting. If you can't think of a color combo to use, check fashion magazines, your local paper's most-recent fashion article, even the displays in the mall shops. And sometimes, it'll jump out at you: looking at your color-coded merchandise, you'll see that there is a lot of choice in a specific color right now... reason enough to feature it on the 2- and 4-ways, tabletops and displays of your swing shop.

Plan ahead. File away magazine layouts, decorating photos, anything that strikes you as fashionable and attractive. That way, next time you have to do a new swing-shop collection and are feeling brain-dead, you'll have some color combos right there (in black-and-white, so to speak!) as examples.

Furniture and decorative accessory shops can gather goods in a color story as well, and helping your clientele choose what-goes-with-what can be even more effective in your merchandise categories! Choosing a black wingback, then surrounding it with black-and-white pottery, a kelly-green lamp and a kelly-and-black plaid lap robe will sell each individual piece in a flash!

Remember: Selling just $4 net profit more a day, because your swing shop is SO irresistibly colorful, adds up to your goal of $100 more a month! Add an idea a month, keep using the earlier ideas, and you're well on your way to making $10,000 more a year!
